Situated in the heart of Dalmatia, Tučepi could be an excellent starting point for numerous excursions to the old Dalmatian towns, the islands, the Dalmatian hinterland and the Bosnia and Herzegovina as well.
 
For the people who enjoy the nature, hiking, walking or even extreme sports the Biokovo mountain offers a wide palette of unforgettable adventures with the ineffably beautiful scenery. If you are not interesting to walk or to hike along the paths through the olive groves and pine woods, stretched across the hills up to the peaks, you can take a car and, through the Natural park Biokovo, reach the highest peak of the mountain, Sv. Jure (1762 m). Apart from the National Park, you can experience the beauty of this mountain taking a walk under the sheer rocks along the old paths used as the connection between the villages in the foothills of the Biokovo. Probably is the most interesting place the Botanical gardens in Kotišina, a village in the foothills of Biokovo between Makarska and Tučepi; the Botanical gardens were arranged by the friar Jure Radić. From the Villa Borić you need one or one and half hours walking afoot. For those who like extreme sports the specialized tourist agencies in Tučepi are available for contact; the trip arrangements including professional guide are there offered.
 
Trogir is an old small town built by the Greek colonists in the 4. century b.Chr., located approx. 25 km northwest of Split (approx. 80 km distance from Tučepi). It was built on a small island connecting the mainland with the island of Čiovo. This city was declared a protected historical monument under the patronage of UNESCO. The two millenniums old history of the town, established in the ancient times, are visible on the buildings and in the architecture. The three-ship cathedral, constructed at the end of the 12. and the beginning of the 13. century, completed in the year 1251, is the most monumental Dalmatian cathedral among the cathedrals and churches in the Romanesque style. The main western Radovan's portal (from the year 1240) contains the greatest number of sculptures and represents, from the standpoint of art, the best example of the mediaeval sculpture in Croatia and also in the whole South-East Europe . On the cathedral construction itself all the styles can be recognized, which were significant for the Dalmatian architecture in that period of time: Romanesque style, early and late Gothic style, Renaissance, mannerism.
 
Solin of today, a small town on the mouth of river Jadro in the Kaštela Bay, located only few kilometres north of Split (approx. 60 km distance from Tučepi), was built on the ruins of Salona, the biggest and most important town in Dalmatia in the antiquity. The town was a hotbed of the Christian religion in this space, with the first Christian communities established by the colonists from the East. In the second half of the 3.century a Christian commune was organized in Salona. In the emperor Dioclezian's time, at the end of the 3. century, the Christian preacher Dujam immigrated from Syria to Salona. He was killed at the river Jadro during one persecution of the Christian people in the year 303. The last three centuries of the old Salona life are known for developing of a very powerful Christian community in the town and for its influence to the whole province. In the year 614, indeed, the Avars and the Slavs destroyed the town. The left population, who successfully escaped, found refuge on the near islands and in the Dioclezian's palace. There was born a new town, Split. The remains of St.Dujam were carried over from the destroyed Salona in the fortified Dioclezian's palace, precisely, in the mausoleum of the emperor Dioclezian, the brutal persecutor of the Christians. From that time St. Dujam is the patron of Split .
 
Split is the second biggest and the most important town in Croatia , after Zagreb , and also the biggest town on the East Adria seaside ( 200.000 inhabitants) . Split is 60 km far from Tučepi. The town celebrated recently its foundation 1700 years ago. The founder of the town was one of the most powerful Roman emperors, Dioclezian, born in one village near to Salona. The town raised in the 3. century within the construction of the Dioclezian's palace. This magnificent town/Dioclezian's summer residence, was declared a protected historical monument under the patronage of UNESCO. The cathedral of St. Dujam is considered to be a building of the highest value in the palace. It is interesting that the emperor Dioclezian planed this building to be his mausoleum. However, the mausoleum of the one of the most powerful Roman emperors, known as brutal persecutor of the Christians, was reshaped in the 7. century to the cathedral dedicated to St. Dujam, the Christian martyr from Salona. Apart from this fascinating palace, there are in Split a lot of attractions, which should be visited and experienced. At the same time, Split is the biggest traffic joint in Dalmatia , with ferry harbour, railway and bus-station and airport.
 
The town Sinj is situated in the middle part of the Dalmatian hinterland, on the western skirts of the plain, 80 km distance northwest of Tučepi. This town is mainly known for Alka, its famous tournament. Alka was established in the year 1715, commemorating the glorious victory of the Sinj's contenders over the Turks. According to the old statute being still in force exclusively the members of the Alka guild from Sinj can participate in the tournament. The members of the guild can be only irreproachable inhabitants of Sinj and Cetinska Krajina (area around the Cetina river), if they are born there and if that region the homeland of their parents is. Alka was organized on the model of the numerous tournaments, which were organized in that epoch all over Europe , but especially in the Mediterranean countries. One of the peculiarities of this picturesque town is the Roman monument from the 1.century b.Chr., dedicated to one game which could be precursor of the football. The young warriors of the Illyrian clan Delmats used to had fan between the conflicts in a way that they bandied a ball made of some kind of leather. The Roman legionaries adopted this game and used it for exercizes.
 
The Cetina river springs in the foot of the Dinara in the village Cetina north of Vrlika, 382 m above sea-level. Its length is 105 km and it flows into the straits of Brač in the town Omiš. The whole flow of this river involves the following Karst plains: Cetinsko polje (polje=plain), Vrličko polje, Koljansko polje, Ribarničko polje, Hrvatačko polje and Sinjsko polje. The river water is crystal clean from its spring to the mouth, rich in numerous affluent making picturesque cascades. You can experience the Cetina river with all the adventures this Karst river may give you, in the one-day trips organized by specialized tourist agencies: you have at disposal boat driving downstream the canyon, horse-riding along the river on the paths and meadows of the plain of Sinj or rafting through the innumerable small cascades, lakes and rapids, with a guide.
A mediaeval small city on the coast, located up the picturesque canyon of the Cetina river, 30 km west of Tučepi. Over the mouth of the river, the unique mediaeval fortification Fortica is well preserved, nestled in the sheer rocks of the canyon. Omiš has a rich history. In the Middle Ages in the 12. and 13. century Omiš was governed by the dukes Kačićs, the leader of the pirates of Omiš. The pirates of Omiš used to attack pope's galleys and traders of Venetia, Dubrovnik , Kotor, Split ... The town is full with historical buildings. Every year in the July, the most known festival of the Dalmatian traditional vocal music, so called ''klape'' , is organized. Five kilometres far from Omiš, located up the Cetina canyon, you will find Radmanove mlinice, a holiday resort known for its home-made bread, baked in a traditional manner.
The town attracting other places in the foothills of Biokovo. Distance from Tučepi only 3 km. Since the park-wood Osejava is stretched between Tučepi and Makarska, we would suggest to visit Makarska taking a walk or by bike. Makarska is the administrative and business centre of the region, which is rich in cultural and historical monuments and other attractions. The first written track reported about the town Mucurum (Makarska) in the year 533; under the present name it was mentioned for the first time in the year 1502. Besides different sacral and civilian objects, it is recommendable to visit the city museum with its ethnologic collection of the Makarska seaside region as well as the unique malacological museum (with shells) within the Franciscan Monastery.
8 nautical miles distance from Tučepi. The island was colonized by the Greek colonists in the 4. century b. Chr. Hvar is full of exciting landscapes, beaches, small charming bays, olive groves and lavender fields. The town itself, situated on the south part of the island, is the biggest settlement, rich in the Romanesque and the Renaissance buildings, with a typical Mediterranean atmosphere. The public theatre of the town, built in the year 1612, is the oldest completely preserved theatre building in this part of the Europe . The small town Jelsa, the second biggest place on the island, situated in the north part vis-a-vis Tučepi is known for its wine production and the agriculture. During the whole summer time the whole-day excursions to the islands of Hvar and Brač with sailing boats from Tučepi and Makarska are organized. The place Sućuraj on the Island of Hvar has regular ferry-connection with Drvenik (15 km south of Tučepi).
8 nautical miles distance from Tučepi. In the past, the main economic activity of the population was cattle-breeding. There are a lot of gastronomes thinking that also today on this island one can eat the best lamb's meat in Dalmatia . Besides this, you can enjoy a taste of other insular specialities such as smoked ham and wine, especially the excellent red wine sort named Bolski Plavac should be mentioned.The place Sumartin on the island of Brač has regular ferry-connection with Makarska. During the summer the whole-day excursions with sailing boats from Tučepi and Makarska are daily organized.
Mediaeval town, located in the hinterland behind the Biokovo mountain, 70 km distance from Tučepi, near to the rich Karst plain known for its good wines. Imotski is also known for its amazing two lakes – Plavo jezero (the blue one) and Crveno jezero (the red one) , the Karst phenomenon's formed after the destructive earthquakes in the early past of our planet. In this town one can feel a total different atmosphere related to the seaside. Imotski has also some characteristics of a littoral small town because of its Dalmatian stone houses and climate. The town itself is nestled in the imposing elevation called Podi 440 m above sea-level. The fortification named Topana , located on the slopes of the Modro jezero, dominates the town. The fortification was built in the 10. century. Due to its dominating position over the great part of the region, it was of a great strategy importance in the history. The fortification was in the Turk's hands more than 200 years, to the year 1717. The shape from that time was preserved to the present time. In a number of restaurants and wine-shops you will have opportunity to enjoy perfect food and excellent wines.
 
Vrgorac is a small town nestled in the middle of the Biokovo mountain, not far from the Bosnia and Herzegovina border, some 40 km from Tučepi. We would suggest you to visit the house in which the greatest Croatian poet Tin Ujević was born (1891-1955) or to undertake trips into the intact nature. The surroundings of Vrgorac enables one to experience intensively Dalmatian Karst landscape. Although crude on the first impression, it represents a hidden side of Dalmatia with all its beauty untouched. You can walk using the hiking paths and visit the ethno-village Kokorići.
 
World-known sanctuary, located approx. 70 km northeast of Tučepi in the neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegowina. Međugorje is one of the most famous and most visited pilgrimage places in the Catholic world. In this place, as testified by the eye-witnesses, the Virgin Mary Mother Jesus appears to them for more than 20 years now. Since the year 1981 onwards the Lady was regularly giving the peace messages to the apparition visionaries, and from that time on this place attracts millions of visitors from all the world. After attending the mass you can visit the place of the Lady's apparition
 
Mostar is an unique town in this area. It is approx. 90 km far from Tučepi. Thanks to the exceptional coupling of Orient and West, Mostar is an irresistibly charming place. In this town the various cultures and religions left their traces. In the Ottoman's empire this was an important trade and traffic centre, today's it is a popular trip destination. Besides the unique gastronomical offer and the impressive architecture, Mostar's main monument is the old stone bridge on the Neretva river. The town owes its name to the bridge (bridge=most). In the year 2005 the bridge was declared a protected historical document under the patronage of UNESCO. In the same year, for the first time in one town, in Mostar was erected a monument of Bruce Lee , the most popular actor in the movies about fighting skills.
 
The Neretva river is the longest and biggest river in the East-Adria river-basin. It springs in the Lebršnik mountain in the Bosnia and Herzegovina 1.095 m above sea-level. It is 218 km long: 196 km of the river length belongs to the Herzegovina , 22 km to the south Croatia . From the place Opuzen the river is dispensed in twelve channels making a wide delta. From the coast to the town Metković (20 km) the Neretva river is navigable. In the valley of the river, called also the Green Valley , there are three towns. The town Metković was mentioned for the first time in the year 1442, the town Opuzen, which name originated from Fort Opus, a fortification built by the Venetian in the year 1684, as well as the town Ploče, the youngest urban place, systematically built not earlier than after 1945. For the first time it was mentioned in the year 1387 under the name Porto Tolero. The valley of the Neretva river belongs to the richest agricultural regions in Croatia , particularly known for its citrus fruits cultivation (mandarins). The valley is also an ornithological refuge for numerous kinds of wading birds and migratory birds. On the other side, this area has an excellent gastronomical offer – we would suggest you to choose frogs, eels or different kinds of brodetto.
Dubrovnik , the city-monument, surrounded by the thick walls, is rich in buildings in the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and the baroque style. This town is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the world. It is situated in the South-East part of Dalmatia , 140 km distance from Tučepi. This town/republic was free and independent until the year 1806, when it was occupied by Napoleon's general Lauriston. Thanks to its righteous social organization and the long tradition in the seaborne trade on the other side, the small republic succeeded to maintain its power, freedom and prosperity. In addition, with the clever diplomacy the republic kept its dependence preserved, although the powerful states tried in the past again and again to get this beautiful and rich town. You can visit Dubrovnik in your private arrangement or within the organized whole-day excursions by bus.
